1001 Places/Experiences to See or Savour #325 - Perito Moreno Glacier, Patagonia

1001 Places/Experiences to See or Savour After Remission #325

- Perito Moreno Glacier, Patagonia

(Here we are, right in front of this bright bluish white Perito Moreno Glacier. The visual impact, seeing it for the first time, was similar to our first views of Machu Picchu - jaw-dropping beauty. And to think that we are able to see this without having to march high up an altitude-sickness- inducing mountain or in a freezing winter. Nope, it's just 5m above sea-level and 6C cool on the lake, as we approach this blue beauty on a boat. The silence of the morning was broken by the occasional crack and thunder of big ice masses dropping into the lake, creating a mini tsunami in its wake. At 75m high and another 100m deep, it is the only glacier on this huge South Patagonia ice-field that is not receding, according to the guide. This is the south side of the glacier - a sizeable boat looks small with the glacier wall as the backdrop - see last photo)
