1001 Places/Experiences to See or Savour #326 - Hiking the Perito Moreno Glacier, Patagonia

1001 Places/Experiences to See or Savour After Remission #326

- Hiking the Perito Moreno Glacier, Patagonia

(No words can fully describe the sheer thrill of my first glacier-hike at Perito Moreno Glacier. It's my kind of thrill - at 3C, perfect temperature for any hike! After a quick brief by our excellent guides, Marcelo and Tato, we are off - with crampons on. Though bulky and uncomfortable, they are absolutely required, if you don't want to slip and break a hip or knee. The ice walls were gorgeously deep blue, as we walked pass several deep crevasses. When climbing down the ice, I could feel the pressure on my knees and ankles, bcoz we were required to bend our knees to give more stability, as the crampons bite the ice - not snow, but real ice. After the near 2hr hike, our guides surprised us by opening a bottle of whisky for all, on the real-ice-rocks or just fresh plain water from the melting ice. This is a hike to remember for life, much like my Machu Picchu climb - click here for "Machu Picchu" - and last year's hike up the Tiger's Nest Monastery - "Tiger's Nest". This Perito Moreno Glacier hike is wonderfully better for me in one aspect - it's so cool at 3C! Watch the 2 videos here - you can feel the coolness; the last video showed what happened immediately after a huge ice-wall peeled off into the lake)
